ISB sets records in Global MBA Rankings
Financial Times has come up with an exhaustive report on various B-Schools all over the world. This report has a lot of details. You can download the full ranking from this PDF
ISB – Indian School of business
The interesting part of this ranking is that ISB has first time appeared for the ratings. It has also set some records. ISB is the only college listed from India. That is a great news. None of the IIMs have shown up.
ISB is ranked 20 in the list. They are ranked FIRST in terms of the Weighted Salary (in $). The world recognizes ISB at par with other top B-Schools like Stanford GSB, Harvard, Wharton, LBS and INSEAD, which none of the other Indian colleges could do for years.
ISB’s one year MBA is equally rated with other two year MBAs. This shows the standard of education there. In terms of Career, ISB is ranked 4th globally.
Tution Fees @ ISB
Many people think ISB charges high tution fees. Here are my opinions about that.
ISB charges around 15 Lakhs for the course, which when compared to other global B-Schools is very less. ISB tries to show itself as a Global school, which other schools in India fail to do.
IIMs charge around 4 L per Annum. So total course cost is 8 L. Since you are studying for an extra year, you miss one year’s salary, which you will be getting after graduating. Let’s take the average salary as 15 L which you are going to miss. That makes the difference.
Cost @ ISB : 15 L (fee)
Cost @ IIM : 8 L (fee) + 15 L (one year salary after graduating)
So you spend 8 L more in IIMs. Simple calculations.

Well, FT is known for its quirks.
A more accepted ranking would be Businessweek or USNews.
Just my opinion.

HBS/Stanford being 4/5 is dumb. ISB is nowhere near the top US Schools in terms of education, brand value, student achievements/calibre, diversity etc. Its just because ISB students all want to make a lot of money (as opposed to going to non-profit etc), that their weighted salaries are so high. Take these rankings with a grain (maybe a spoonful) of salt.

Hi Guys,
I have a question on whether 1 year or 2 year course would be suitable for a person who has around 3 years or more of IT industry experience and is looking to make a shift to a completely different domain – say Investment Banking.
Even if we accept the fact that an ISB degree would be cheaper than a IIM degree, from what I have read, my understanding is that moving into a completely new domain is very difficult with a 1 year course. A 1 year course is suitable if you want to leverage your experience in the same or allied industries with probably a better/financial role. There will always be more people who have come from financial/business education background in a 1 year course and given the limited number of placement opportunities , wouldn’t they be better off in getting that elusive I-bank job?
Compare that with the IIM’s where you start from the basics and in 2 years, you can catch up with the business folks as well. Also most of the guys are engineers out there and hence you will be in a level playing field, compared to 1 year courses where the competition from biz folks will be tremendous.
What do you people think? I might be wrong – please share your thoughts on this.Do you think a 1 yr MBA from ISB is good enough to get into an I-bank with engineering work ex?

Its interesting to note that ISB does a cost benefit with the IIMs when the course structure is different. while the average work ex in ISB is 5 yrs, the average work ex in IIM/Any other top b-school is 2 yrs. Hence, the average salary pre-mba for a group of ISB student would be higher than that of other b-school students, and hence the difference needs to be factored in. So the simple calculations fall down by atleast 50%. Also the fact that everyone in ISB has a min of 2 yrs work ex and still the average salaries or job profiles are hardly different from other b-schools, it makes one wonder whether it is more prudent to invest in a school which charges 20 lacs or schools which charge 8 lacs for 2 years. Also, while there would be instances wherein people would have left ISB with the same pay packets that they came in with, the probability of that happening in the IIMs/Other b-schools is negligible. Hence, for someone with 5-7 years of work ex ISB is definitely not as cost -effective as the IIMs in terms of ROI. For people with 2-3 years of work – ex ISB would definitely be better than the IIMs. Also, ISB has miles to go before they can prove that they are an elite b-school. 7 years of existence with media coverage cannot define its performance.Only when its Alums do something noteworthy can they claim that they are a premier b-school. And the best way to know is by checking what %age of its alum – class of 2002 or 2003 – have reached middle -level leadership positions and are poised to move up the ladder.
